Crete is the fifth largest island of the Mediterranean Sea and one of its major mass-tourism destinations; this sort of tourist industry based mostly on the "all-inclusive" concept and the "mega-hotel complex" has already damaged big part of the northern coast. Lately locals are trying to react proposing a different model of tourist development which in fact is the very old one, that what made Greece and especially Crete world famous: legendary hospitality, organic food according the principles of the Mediterranean diet, pristine nature and rich folk traditions. We visit four of the most prominent guest-houses of Crete that promote eco-friendly or "sustainable" tourism, Milia, Vamos, Aspros Potamos and Enagron. |

It's not broadly known that Greece is the largest saffron producer in Europe and world's second. About 5 tons of top quality saffron are exported every year mostly to Italy and Spain. Curiously enough, the whole Greek production comes from a very small area in the North of the country, where mainly women still traditionally cultivate the most expensive spice in the world. |

The excavation of the burial tumulus of Mikri Doxipara-Zoni was started in 2002. The excellent state of preservation of the wagons and the skeletons of the horses, as well as the presence of wood impressions from two of the wagons, offer a unique and particularly vivid picture. |

Sadly enough, recycling is not very high on the list of priorities neither for the government and the authorities nor for the ordinary people in Greece; the country displays one of the worst recycling rates in the EU. In this context, it seems even more praiseworthy the effort of an entrepreneur from Crete (Apokoronas, Chania). Mr. Andreas Tzombanakis decided, 10 years ago, to set up a small factory of blown glass using for raw material glasses that he is collecting and recycling in his workshop along with scrap metal. |

Crete is one of the most favorable Greek regions for the development of renewable energies thanks to its climatic conditions. Given that the intense tourist development of the island is creating an increasing (and seasonal) demand for electricity, renewable energy sources are not any more an alternative option but a matter of vital importance. The owners of two eco-friendly hotels of Crete (Milia and Aspros Potamos) decided to accept the challenge: their hotels are based exclusively on solar photovoltaics! |

How could it be dining with Socrates, Aristophanes or Pericles? You can have a taste of it at "Archaion Gevseis" ("Ancient Tastes") Restaurant. Situated in an old quarter of Athens, it revives the ambience of a ancient Greek banquet. It is the world's first restaurant based exclusively on Greek recipes more than 2,500 years old! |
